  1. Overcharges.

We were overcharged $3196 for our move from Coldwater MI to Deltona FL.
Original estimate was for $4000 we ended up paying $7890.
Our original binding estimate was 1474 cubic feet. We paid for 2700 cubic feet.
Our actual cubic feet was closer to 1700, This figure is based on the actual space used on the moving trailer that delivered our possession’s on 2/13/2016. Trailer was 101 inches wide, 118 inches high, actually less for the front third of our load as we took the first 258 inches in length of the trailer. Our possessions took less than one third, at the front, of the total trailer space. Measurements were completed by myself and the driver, Alex.
We also feel we were overcharged $670.00 for packing. The wrapping was included in original estimate and much of the wrapping and repacking was entirely unnecessary. For example, a 6500-watt generator, on wheels was wrapped. This is the third time we have moved this generator and it has never been wrapped before. Our refrigerator shelves were put in a large, 15 cubic foot, hanging clothes box that was filled with paper and empty boxes. Items we had wrapped/packed were unpacked and repacked. Although we have minimal breakage/damage we still incurred more loss than we ever had with previous moves.
We overcharged for 920 cubic feet or $2383 (920 @ $2.59 per foot) plus 6% Fuel Charge $143, and packing charges of $670. Total $3196.
When Dario, the driver who picked up our load, arrived in a 24-foot Budget rental truck he told us the truck would hold over 1800+ cubic feet. He also immediately revised our original estimate to $5580 for 1800+ cubic feet and stated it could be more if he needed to come back with another truck. I have since determined through Budget, 800-462-8343 that the truck only held 1380 cubic feet. Although we would like to give Dario and Northstar moving the benefit of the doubt the fraud was just too obvious when they showed up with a truck that only holds 1380 cubic for a job that at minimum was 1465 cubic feet. This was out and out fraud and if Northstar Moving is indeed a sub-contractor for Around the States Moving we hope that you would never use them again. After loading the first truck we were advised that a second truck would be need , or we could move what was left by ourselves. The next day Dario came back with the same now empty 26-foot truck and loaded about a third of the truck with the rest of our possessions. It was only after Dario and his crew had finished loading the second load that he gave us the figure of $7890 for 2700 cubic feet. Eventually, as we felt we had no choice as most of our possessions had been picked up the day before, we signed the new contract and paid another $2745 by check made out to Around the States Moving and Storage. This check was cashed by Northstar moving.
When our possessions were delivered on 2/13/2016 the driver, Alex, required payment of $3745 before he would unload our possessions. I do not know what company Alex worked for, he just told us he was sub-contracted for the job and ours was the second of four moves he had on the truck.
When speaking with Around the States customer service, 7:18 pm 2/2/2016, Leigh told us our load was 1900 cubic feet?
This was our fifth cross country move and we have never had an issue with our estimates before. We also had a moving company come to our home for an estimate and their estimate was based on 1500 cubic feet.
Company offered a settlement of $62 through their claims procedure. This company is a total rip off. DO NOT USE THEM.

  2. Horrible Experience.

In December 2015 I contacted Around the States moving for a quote on the cost of my move from Newark, Delaware to Dallas, TX (approx. 1438 miles). Initially I spoke to Bryan who gave me a quote of $900. We had numerous conversations prior to my move in regards to adding and removing items. I specifically remember speaking to him about both my dining room table set that was a hightop, which I assured him would be taken apart upon pickup and the four chairs to go with it. In addition when asked about my couch I specifically told him a two piece sectional with a 3 seater couch and a chaise lounge that could fit 3 people as well. On my quote he noted the chaise sofa as a chair which to my ignorance apparently was not correct. I also specifically asked him if my microwave needed to be boxed up and was told it did not.
I awaited my move day which was supposed to be the 28th or 29th of December and I was supposed to receive a call about five days before then (which I confirmed at least three times with Bryan). However, I never received a call from anyone and I in turn called around the states myself on the 28th. At that time I was told my move was scheduled for the 29th between 10am 12pm and the driver would call when he was on his way. The driver actually arrived earlier then 10am, which I am fine with, but never bothered to call. In fact when he arrived he just started knocking on the door and was on the phone having an unrelated conversation.

He came in to access my apartment and immediately told me the chaise lounge is considered a couch and he needed to charge me for more cubic feet. I explained to him the conversation I had with Bryan and instead of listening to me and at least trying to break down how it could have been some sort of miscommunication, he continuously talked over me. At times he began yelling about the size and that he was going to charge me extra for the chaise in addition to my dining room chairs being so tall. He then told me the microwave should have been boxed and the furniture had to be wrapped (which I was told by Bryan, and as it states on my agreement is part of the service at no additional cost) and that was an extra fee. He then tried to make me feel better for the extra $250 he charged for the chaise by saying he would waive the fee for wrapping materials. He wrote me out an inventory list of all the wrapping items which totaled $78 and then zeroed it out as a discount. To add injury to insult he then noticed the wrap I had in my apartment that I used (I initially wrapped the bottom of my couches and all of my dining room furniture before pickup) and said "oh you have your own wrap, that saves you money because I can use that instead of all of mines".  At that point with me beginning my travel to Texas the next day, I opted not to argue over the $250 extra dollars he charged me in hopes that the rest of the process would make up for the first two initial headaches, but I was wrong.
As stated in my contract my move should take 2-12 business days, or as told to me by both Bryan and the man that picked up my furniture about 7 to 10 days. However, when I had not received a call regarding the delivery by 1/6 which would have been 7 business days and 9 days, I called to find out the status. I was unable to get anyone on the normal number so I googled a different number and got in touch with the pickup driver in Delaware. He told me they were going to call me the next day because the truck would be leaving at the end of the week and was happy I called so he didn't have to call me. He stated the truck had numerous other stops (including Atlanta and Austin) and that they would call 24 hours before they came to Dallas. Again I patiently waited another week until 1/13 and then I called back. I was transferred to a customer service number where I was told that me I could call the driver for the status and gave me the drivers number. I called the driver and asked for a status and he begin to run down his whole schedule to me and how he didn't know when he was coming and he would try to get there by friday or saturday. I attempted to assure him that because of work, Saturday would be fine with me and probably best from him but he continued cutting me off and telling me he is still driving and can't give me a time estimate but would call me when he knew more. Thankfully he called the next evening on 1/14 telling me he would arrive tomorrow and that if he had a pickup on Saturday and I couldn't get there Friday he would have to charge me more money. I assured him as long as it was after 4 on Friday I could make it. I told him I would call him at 12 noon on friday 1/15 to give him an update on my schedule.

As promised I called him the on 1/15 at 12 and he said that day was best for him. We agreed to meet at the storage unit at 4:30. Upon my arrival he attempted to tell me he couldn't fit his truck in the gate. The storage unit is wide enough to fit about 4 to 5 cars side by side and so is every isle. My friend was forced to drive the driver around the storage unit to prove he could fit his truck. Once we were in I took the driver and movers upstairs and walked them to the storage unit. On the way there the driver angrily expressed how long the walk was and why didn't I get a closer unit. After showing it to him he begin to complete the paperwork at which time he said he had to charge me because he could only carry the stuff 75 feet as per the contract and there was a charge for each additional 75 feet. At that point I had had it and I told him I wouldn't be giving them another dime and he needed to take my stuff off the truck and drop it at 75ft. This made him upset and he instructed his movers to remove my stuff from the truck and he began smoking his cigarette. When I asked him again to carry it 75 feet he said he would only do that if the unit was within 75 feet and would drop my stuff outside of the truck. He then cut off all the blankets and wrapping and I told him I was charged for blankets. However, once I got home I found I was not, but I was charged for couch wrapping. Not only did he cut the blankets off but he took off all the wrapping on my couch including the ones I was charged for and the ones I had pre wrapped. He continued to practice this on the second couch after I initially told him what color wrapping was mines. Once he was done he left and during the entire unloading process you could tell the movers were uncomfortable and felt it was not being handled very professionally.

Around the states moving provided me with the worst cross country move I have ever experienced. From the pickup people to the drop off people and in between I was provided with sub par customer service, unbelievable attitudes and it was evident that they were looking for additional ways to charge me more money. To make matters even more unprofessional every time I spoke to someone on the phone down to the drop off person I was told not to forget the money I owed at drop off. All I could think at that point is your worried about money and I haven't even gotten my stuff yet. I would never recommend this company and plan on filing a claim with their complaint department to receive my money back. If I don't I will explore small claims court for the numerous contract violations I was forced to endure. .

  3. A nice move.

I met this guys few month ago when I moved all the way to Florida, they took care of me quite good, had their manager called me after I left them a massage, we talked for a few minutes while he explained to me everything I needed to know. we set up a price for my 3 BDR apartment and the next thing was the movers coming to my house and caring my furnishings on the track. they did a good job, big guys and hard workers. will use them again in the future.

  4. Small move.

I needed to move a small amount of household items from my grandparents house to my house. I had never used a moving company for a long distance move. I read a lot of online reviews of many companies and spoke to at least 5 companies too. Needless to say, I felt most I spoke to or heard from were like a "used-car salesman"; I struggled to trust anything I was told. That being said, I still needed to move the stuff.

I selected Around the States because I didn't feel pressured to select company, they had a local office located near the origin of the move, and they offered a very competitive price.

Goods were picked up a little late (they arrived at 5, not btw hours of 12-2 as initially told). Upon arrival, they did a great job caring for and handling items to get on truck (including a grandfather clock). I was told 7-14 day delivery window. But, was surprised to get a phone call 2 days after they picked up goods to arrange for delivery on day 3 from pick-up. 3 days to get from DC area to North Texas, awesome!

Upon arrival at destination, product was unloaded with care and placed where I asked them to place it. Crew was super nice and efficient.

Overall, if I need to move cross-county again, they will be top on my list to reach out to first!

  5. Worst Experience of my life.

I'm not even sure where to begin!  This company is a bunch of liars and they are thieves.  Horrible communication!  Management doesn't return calls.  No promises kept.  I am getting an attorney and I've contacted the BBB.  They made my relocation a living hell and I will make sure that this companies name becomes dirt.  I don't want any other consumer to have to deal with what I have.
    So frustrated. .
