Don't use Vanguard.
This is not a company you want to trust your move to. Probably all their salesman are the same, but mine was particularly bad. His name is Michael Jameson and he is a stone cold liar. Nothing he says or sends you in writing about the company is reliable.
Michael claims that they are not a broker of moving services but their own moving company. This is a lie. He says you will be able to track your load after it is in transit. This is not true.
He says the people who come to pick up your load will be qualified, expert movers who can assist with every facet of your move. They are not and they don't, that is another lie.
He says your load will be unloaded by Vanguard employees who are again professional experts. It won't and they aren't.
They do not use their own trucks.
They do not use their own employees.
They are an entirely or nearly entirely brokered move company.
They break the move up into stages with no oversight of the personnel in the various stages. Sales people are in a different group from pickup people. Transport and drop off people have nothing to do with any of the other groups. Dispatch is its entirely separate own operation. They barely communicate with each other. No one takes any responsibility for the result of the move or broken items or behavior of workers.
Also, and most frustratingly, once Vanguard has your belongings, they do not communicate about their schedule or even want to establish one. If they do establish one, they will not stick to it and they won't tell you they aren't sticking to it. After the sale is made, all special handling and helpfulness and care is gone. Vanguard is terrible.
Michael talked us into getting our load picked up early so that our items would arrive at our new home about the same time/day as we did. We accepted this schedule, despite the ramification being that we had to live in our house empty for a week before we left for Florida. Instead of being a carefully scheduled process, our belongings finally came 10 days after we arrived at our new home. We repeatedly called Michael and other members of his company (Daniel, Roberta, Juan) in various departments trying to find out when our things would be coming. No one would give us an answer. They just would say that they didn't know and had to check with someone else who they couldn't get a hold of at day. I heard that story five times.
As previous reviewer says, "Another major issue with this company is how many times items are loaded and unloaded from a truck, which increases the chances of your items breaking or getting lost (stolen)." There was no mention of this aspect of the move until after Vanguard showed up to get our belongings. Our items were taken from our home (San Diego) in a rented 22' truck, not a moving truck to a warehouse and unloaded there (Los Angeles). Two weeks later, they were reloaded into a rented 26' foot truck along with another load going to Texas. The drivers of this rented truck went to a city in Texas and unloaded that load. Then they brought our items to Florida and unloaded. The pickup and drop off workers were hard workers and tried to do a good job. Everything in between was garbage.
Horrible company.
They arrived 6 hours late. The dispatcher doesn't know that the travel time between Glendale and Oceanside in Friday afternoon traffic, takes longer than 15 minutes. The guys were hard working guys. When they needed a drill to disassemble a table, I pulled one from my tool box and let them borrow it. This tool box is now missing!
They offered to deliver my items early in Portland, so, I agreed. They demanded I pay the remaining balance, so I did. After the driver took my check and started unloading he casually mentioned the rest of my items would arrive next week, as scheduled. Nobody said this would only be some of my items. I am now paying rent at a place with only a portion of my furniture.
I was told my items were put on the truck Aug 1, and will arrive Friday, Aug 3. Aug 3, my things did not arrive! Now they promised me my things would be delivered first thing Monday morning! (He told me this on a Friday afternoon, and the drive from Glendale to Portland is at least 18 hours without any freeway closures or issues). So, I knew that would be impossible. Meanwhile I had already paid them the full balance and I did not have all of my belongings. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association, the day they collected payment, is the day I should have received my items.
The second load of items arrived yesterday, 2 full weeks after I paid them in full. I noticed a lot of missing items. Most of the missing items are things that are easily carried off, by an employee or someone around their warehouse. The driver that delivered my items said my items were sitting outside, when they loaded them up. So, who knows how many people were able to rummage through my things. My tool box is missing, a few duffle bags are missing with sports equipment, step ladders, dollie, and a big table. These are just the obvious things I have noted. I haven't started going through everything.
Do NOT use this company, unless you want people going through your things and pulling out the valuable items. Another major issue with this company is how many times items are loaded and unloaded from a truck, which increases the chances of your items breaking or getting lost (stolen).
