  1. Horrible experience!

I can't believe this company is still in business after the awful experience I had with them. Moved from Chicago to Pasadena. Lost my couch, dining room chair, damaged my dining room table, lost/stole my bike and then claimed I didn't have a bike. Charged me an additional $500.00 to change my move date, but didn't tell me that I would be charged. Over $5,000.00 in damaged/lost items and received a check for $150.00. Highway robbery! I don't know why anyone would use them after reading the reviews. I've moved a lot and BY FAR WORST MOVERS EVER. I wrote the CEO about my experience and he told me to jump in a lake. I guess it's true, the fish rots from the head down.

  2. If I could give a zero I would!

The most unprofessional company I’ve ever had to deal with. They contracted our move out to a moving company filing for bankruptcy (didn’t tell us found out online while wondering if they sold our stuff) which this company then laid off all their drivers. Because they had no drivers , they could not get us our stuff for almost 4wks!! North American van lines would tell us one thing and the other company (republic movers) would tell us another. They gave us 4 different dates that they promised we’d have our stuff and never called the day before or showed up. So finally after 22days of waiting (having thanksgiving on the floor) and right before Xmas we finally got our stuff. The movers broke the legs off our tv console, several dishes, they wrote on items, etc!! After filing a claim North American van lines won’t reimburse us for all the winter clothes I had to get my kids for school (since they couldn’t manage to deliver ours on time) the only reimbursement we get is a insulting $50 a day. That doesn’t fix our damaged furniture, That doesn’t cover anything we had to get to live on for a month without dishes, cookware, mattresses, bedding, and the list goes on and on. This has been beyond a mistake. We should have moved our stuff ourselves. Don’t take a chance at North American van lines. This was a expensive mistake. It costed us everything to use them. The few nice pieces of stuff we had they broke. It’s not right.

  3. Moving nightmare.

I chose North American because I thought I could trust a company that had been in business for decades. Big mistake! The estimator didn't do her job accurately, we waited for weeks past our move date for them to find a truck. Then the truck didn't have enough room for a good portion of our house. We waited for another 5 weeks to get the remainder of our things. Many arrived crushed or damaged. They overcharged us $2,000, have no trouble collecting the money up front, but I'm still fighting for reimbursement. If I had to do it over again, North American would be the last movers who I would even consider!! Wish I could rate 0 stars.

  4. Lost and damaged items.

For a period of 4 years I paid over $40,000 to The Moving Connection (a Baltimore affiliate of North American Van Lines) to safely store and deliver my possessions, which included many valuable antiques. On June 28, 2018, the above company delivered my belongings to Glenside, PA. Contrary to my request, the movers carelessly piled up hundreds of boxes, many marked fragile, in my detached garage, which made it impossible to verify whether any of their contents were damaged or missing. Upon later examination, I discovered that a number of antique lamps, clocks, etc. had been damaged or were missing. My attempts to obtain compensation for my considerable financial losses by filing a claim with SIRVA (the claims adjuster for NAVL) were unavailing. I received nothing but specious and flimsy corporate boilerplate excuses in defense of gross negligence and incompetence. I intend to pursue this matter further with my credit card company and, if necessary, bring the dispute to the local small claims court.
The upshot is, avoid NAVL at all costs and do not expect fair treatment from any insurance agency affiliated with a major moving company.

  5. Rhode Island to Colorado.

All aspects of our partial load move went very well. Both end movers, including third party services for large glass item were on time and very pro, no dents, scratches, or damage to any item.
Partial load took a little longer for delivery than predicted, but not unreasonable.
Price was the highest quoted but worth it for the results.

  6. Relocated to Idaho from Northern California.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. After paying this company $9,300. to move our belongings to our new home in Idaho from the Bay Area, we are still waiting for many of our boxes and the rest of our furniture, because our “load” was not correctly calculated, therefore they could not get it on the original moving truck. We are going on 4 weeks now, and continue to get the same “we are doing the best we can”, and no answers as to when our situation will be escalated to a person who can get the job done. I have continually requested to speak with a person with the authority to tell me at what point, how long we must wait before they hire someone to move our belongings or ship them using another shipping carrier. This has been a nightmare, with promises of phone updates that NEVER, not once has occurred, with no plan as to the next steps they are going to take in order to get our things to us. They got our money and now they have many of our irreplaceable belongings sitting in their storage facility. Lose lose for us, they are out nothing.

  7. Stay Away !!

Absolute worst moving company. “Grant” the sales rep I’ve been dealing with is extremely disrespectful and told me to stop calling him. It’s been 11 days and I haven’t gotten an update. Highly irresponsible and wouldn’t recommend. His boss won’t even answer his phone, and his voicemail box is full so this is great.

  8. Horrible experience- won't take responsibility for broken dining table.

We hired North American moving company for our relocation from San Antonio TX to Phoenix AZ. We would like to warn everyone not to hire this company for their house move or relocation. We had a horrible experience. Lots of our stuff was damaged in the transit, staff was very rude and mostly clueless. They did not even bother to notify us when they could not deliver on the promised date. We had to keep calling them to figure out where our stuff was.

We now feel that we should have looked at all of their negative reviews before hiring the incompetent North American Moving company. So do your homework and due diligence hiring any movers. They were very expensive, and we thought it would be smooth and professional move as promised, but it was the opposite. We have moved many times before but never had such a bad experience and poor customer service (previous moves were through employers). Packing was horrible and done by inexperienced staff. They did not protect the heavy furniture. They reimbursed us after several months for small broken items but not for the dining table. They are saying they are not liable for the crack as it is weather related, even though it cracked during the move. They even sold us insurance and still will not reimburse us. People who came to deliver the stuff were shocked to see how the stuff was packed and handled. All the boxes were damaged and torn. We have photos to show their packing and how they handled our stuff. If you see North American Moving company, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.

  9. Lost and broken items upon arrival.

North American Van Lines delivered my items cross country from California to Mississippi. Upon delivery, I was missing many items to include two antique couches and an oversized antique chaise lounge chair. Not once did they tell me that there were no couches in the truck. My items were delivered in an 18-wheeler, so I definitely assumed all of my items fit and were present. As the workers were bringing in boxes, they kept asking me where various boxes were to be taken. I kept telling them that this box and that item and that vase and so on were going to go by the gold antique couch.. I made reference to my couches several times. Not once did they even mention that they did not have or even see my three couches. They were the largest pieces of furniture. At the very end as they were preparing to leave, I asked about my antique couches. They said they were not on the truck and they had no idea where they were and that they only picked up the items from the storage facility. They said I had to file a complaint with the storage company and that they were not responsible. I had an antique early 1900s curio cabinet that arrived. The entire bottom leg is missing. I cannot even repair it. The curio is broken which I could have dealt with but the entire leg is missing and I have to keep it standing upside down until they can acquire the missing leg. I have an invaluable 1800s murphy bed that was delivered missing the entire top portion and my interior bedsprings are cracked and broken as if someone opened it and ripped them. They were not noted as broken on my delivery paper. One of my antique chairs that were delivered is missing the back and two other antique couches are broken and cracked.. My 5 foot tall wall painting has a crack in the glass. My antique buffet has been scratched in several places. Many of my antique glassware was delivered broken in the boxes. Several of my collector bottles of wine were delivered broken and spilled overt the other contents of the boxes. I am very displeased with this move. I am a 100% disabled Army veteran that was unable to lift or move on my own. I retired in California and returned to my hometown of Mississippi and hired what I thought was a reputable company to deliver my valuables to me. I just had my new house built and moved in a few weeks ago. I was finally ready for my antiques. I am so hurt and disappointed beyond belief. I paid approximately $15,000.00 for my storage unit over the course of the last 9 years or so. Only a portion of my items were delivered and many of them broken, scratched, dinged, or otherwise damaged. I paid an additional $4807.78 to have my items delivered by the moving company.

  10. Even better than expected.

They were exactly on time for picking up and delivery. They took good care of my things, I saw they even wrapped some items again for safety. Nothing was broken and my things arrived early (expected from april 11th to 30th, arrived on the 13th!). Both picking up and delivery teams were polite and professional. I would recommend them to anyone making an interprovincial move for sure.

  11. Refused to take responsibility.

There were many aspects of this move that were poorly handled. First, we had hired them to also pack our belongings but the packers rushed through and left with many items still unpacked, so we had to do some packing ourselves. A number of items were also lost (suspected to be stolen) such as a bike and laptop computer. The worst part was the severe delay in our delivery that they refused to compensate us for. We were given a quite wide delivery window but then after we arrived in our new house we were told that the delivery window had been moved up for reasons out of their control. However, these reasons, such as it being an international move and the presence of holidays, were all known items prior to when we were given the delivery window. The also used "the availability of Canadian customs" as an excuse even though customs is always available and I seriously doubt they had even contacted them yet as our stuff was still sitting in a warehouse at this point. Our car was also separated from our household goods at this point because they needed my work permit to ship it. I was only informed of this a few days before the shipment was supposed to take place and later told that it was my fault for not knowing that a work permit was needed to ship a car. I maintain that knowing what paperwork is needed is part of the movers job and one of the reasons I paid a mover to do this job. When we started to ask about how compensation was handled for delay of delivery our move coordinator did not answer and started completely avoiding us, not answering any emails in which we brought up the subject and never returning phone calls. When the car finally arrived 19 days late (still 14 days after their new window) it was dropped off at a warehouse. I was told that we could be called 1 or 2 days in advance of delivery, but instead we were called after the car had already been dropped off. When I filed for a delay in the household goods (which were a day late even by the new deadline) I was told that they only compensate for specific actual costs that I did not incur or have receipts for, which is totally unfair as they refused to give me such information before hand. When I submitted a claim for my rental car expenses I was told that they had no liability since they had used a third party to ship the car, even though my contract to have the car shipped was with NAVL. I contacted my move coordinator who told me that this very long delay was because I did not have my work visa when he asked (I didn't have it yet, but did send it the day our stuff was supposed to be loaded, only a few hours after I crossed the boarder and got it) and that there would be no reimbursement for the car delivery being delayed by several weeks.

  12. What a headache!

We got several quotes from different moving companies but decided to go with North American as we were assured that the cost would not be higher, we would have superior service, and our belongings would be loaded onto the truck that was headed to our destination. The representative came to our home and looked at all of our belongings and said I overestimated by 1,000 pounds so the cost should not be more- it could be less though.
We signed..the day before our belongings were to be loaded we were informed that the truck was in a different state so our things would have to be loaded onto a different truck and put into storage for a few days- just what they said would not happen.
Then when calling to find out when our things would arrive we were informed that our belongings were split into 2 shipments as they did not contract a truck big enough. We were also notified that the actual weight was 3,100 pounds more (30% missed estimate- that is not acceptable!) than estimated which meant we owed $2500 more ! We were not asked if we would like to wait to have all belongings shipped together, let alone notified - I had to do all of the calling/emailing to find anything out!
Many of our boxes were damaged, furniture scratched, wood chipped etc.
Our second shipment arrived 12 days after the last day our things were supposed to arrive. We are missing items and they are still missing with little to no communication as to what is being done to find them or resolve this.
I would not recommend this company to anyone. We have been on the phone numerous times and no one seems to care. Terrible customer service and overall service..

  13. They stink.

We picked North American Van Lines because they gave us a good quote and the sales person was nice. Well, they were awful. They outsourced our move. The morning of the move the driver informed us that all our stuff would not be going on the same truck. They picked up to much stuff at the first stop. But said no worries your stuff will be put on a second truck and all will be fine. Well, it wasn’t fine. The first truck came in good time but the second truck didn’t leave Florida until the date our contract said all would be delivered. We got the bulk of our stuff two weeks later. We had no clothes and when I contacted our movers they said not our problem call corporate offices. Well I did and two weeks later am still waiting for a supervisor to call me back because according to them clothes aren’t essentials. I had a funeral to go to and my husband had a job interview which we both had to buy new clothes for and they don’t care. The movers who packed the truck left my,house a mess. I had a friend lock up and they left McDonald wrappers and cans everyrwhere. They stole chicken wings I had in my freezer for my friend. They stole a check I had left in a draw and I had to put a stop payment on and we didn’t get brand new fishing poles and my piggy bank never showed up. We had damage to stuff. I don’t complain it isn’t in my nature. I hate to do it. But this company is awful. If I could prevent one person from using this company it is worth it. They give you a great price. The sales man is nice but than they have you and after that no one cares. Worst movers ever.

  14. Bait and switch. Most stressful move ever.

Cross country move from NY to Idaho. A professional pleasant woman came to the NY house, gave us a quote, and told us if we packed certain things like our clothes and our TVs, we would save some of the 22,000 quoted. We asked for a full pack out.
When the packers arrived, they did 2/3 of the packing, used left over boxes saved from our last move (charged for new ones), then hit the road without finishing the packing.
When we arrived in Idaho, they would not unpack until we gave them a certified check for 22,000 dollars. No adjustments had been made. We were told to contact customer service. Once we were able to talk to a human, we were informed that we had signed a "Guaranteed " quote. Guaranteed that they get 22,000 no matter what they provide or DO NOT provide. So, we paid for a full pack out, got a partial pack out, they used our boxes and charged us for new ones, there have been at least 7 calls to customer service with no compensation /resolution. In addition, Our 5000.00 desk is damaged, but, of course, it is documented as damaged before packing. Not true.
North American states " they really have nothing to do with the move, Beltman is responsible for all that happens." Why have customer service if the answer is to wash your hands of all that happens? This all screams scam to us. Blaming the customers all the way and taking our money for POOR service.
The only decent part of this was the crew who unpacked in idaho worked very hard and did their best.

  15. Smooth move.

Moved by the date range given. Movers were very professional at both ends. Used a local mover, Jacobsen's, based in LaCrosse, WI to load my belongings for a move to Prescott, AZ. Everything arrived in good condition--not a single item broken or missing. Did not charge me extra for unloading from larger truck to a smaller truck at destination, so I was pleasantly surprised.
